Carin Timskog is a Certified Personal Trainer, Health Coach, STOTT Pilates Instructor, revert to Islam and entrepreneur from Gothenburg, Sweden. On a mission to empower Muslim women of the Ummah to get fit and energized, Carin offers in person- and online programs so Muslimahs all around the world can be inspired by the Swedish, active and healthy lifestyle.
Energized Muslimaha’s approach to health is a non-diet approach, understanding the importance of a holistic point of view to life. Healthy habits (both physically and mentally),physical activity, fresh air, healthy food choices in moderate amounts and a regular fitness training are foundational for energy, strength and happiness.
Coming from Sweden, physical activity and a healthy lifestyle, was part of my upbringing and part of my culture. I used to workout almost daily in the gym or yoga studio, go by bicycle, play tennis and I used to go skiing in the Alps every year. I love to be active myself, because of the increase of energy and general wellbeing, and therefore, the good I want for myself, I also want for my sister and other women.
But I also know what it’s like to come to realize that you aren’t as active or healthy as you used to be! And I also know what it’s like to be a new mum with a C-section and not being able to move or walk at first. It’s not always necessarily about being overweight or weak, but also about how you feel inside and how your mood is effected from a sedentary lifestyle. I almost got depressed!
For me it started in my late twenties when I took a big step and moved to Qatar, which however was the most exciting experience I’ve ever done. But it’s no secret that many people gain weight when they move there. Even though that was not exactly my case, the lack of daily activity and moving around as I used to do, kind of hit me at first.
The new and inspiring Arab culture and lifestyle with only assigned parks and the Corniche to walk or run at, were all very different to me. When I reverted to Islam after one and a half years in Qatar and when I put on the hijab, an active lifestyle first became even more tricky, regardless of working out regularly in the fitness club! In my cultural adaptation I went by car everywhere, and I didn’t even leave the car to pick up my take-away food, and it was a lot of take-away food! I think I had some emotional eating issues as well.
When I later moved to Morocco, I met another culture that was another extreme from what I had experienced in Qatar, and another culture where physical activity wasn’t so very common. Neither did I find any ladies only gym with strength training equipment or a facility that I was pleased with, or where I could go regularly. I was really down for some time. And I adapted to the culture (again) and had the tangines with potatoes, meat and bread.. and some more bread… and some croissants.. and ice cream… I got sad, weak and tired!
Enough was enough. What happened? What had I done to myself? It was a wake-up call, big times! I don’t care, or didn’t care, that much about the fat on my belly or thighs; but what I do care about is how I feel! And how I can feel! I don’t wan’t to be weak and lethargic, sleeping and being lazy. Feeling like a victim and allowing food and sugar cravings to control me. I honestly really hate that feeling!
What I do want to feel is strength from within and strength in my body. I want to feel happy, I want to feel energized and I want to be fit! Boomshakalak! I want to be able to go trekking, go bicycling, go on my inlines, go running, being flexible on the yoga mat and being strong to lift weights and so on. In short, I want to have a happy body and mind, so I can be the best me and enjoy this life the most and in the best way possible with all what that includes.
During my struggles, my husband was always very supportive and did his best to help me out. When we moved to a new apartment we set up our compact, yet functional home gym, and I got so happy! To have an assigned place for your workouts is really helpful. When the sport store Decathlon opened I was also really happy, as I could buy some new fitness equipment that helped me to be more inspired as well.
My husband continued to kick my butt (excuse my language!) in a positive and loving manner, and that in combination with my inner strength got me back on track, Alhamdulillah! I found modest, comfy and practical hijabi clothes and I started to move! I went by bike, on my inlines and I went walking in the forest with my newborn in the trekking push-chair. The physical activity, and moving more, got me back on track, and I am so ever pleased for it! Along the journey I also started to eat normally again, and like I used to do before. I got back to basics, I started to care about my needs again and I started to care about my gut health. As it was said, and which is true: “the abs are built in the kitchen and the booty is built in the gym”.
In all this, and as I was rebuilding my body, I was thinking that if I feel like this and have these struggles, what about all other women that don’t have the extensive experience and skills that I have? How do they feel physically and mentally, and how do they find their motivation to start to exercise and move forward to get the results that they actually so badly want? I felt a strong need to help those women. Sisters like you! Because we don’t have to feel the way I did before, and the way you maybe feel due to lack of exercise and a too imbalanced eating regime.

As you know now, I’ve also been struggling in my life from time to time! But Alhamdulillah, thanks to my passion for fitness, my skills and experiences in life, I could bring myself together and pick myself up. I was chasing that feeling of feeling fantastic again! Now I want to help you to do the same!
